We Are Developers

Excel and Access, LLC has been building business solutions since 2004. We are programmers with more than 20 years of experience working with Excel, Access, SQL Server and database technologies.

• When a project calls for additional specialized expertise, I work with a small international network of Microsoft MVPs known as The Association.

 

 

But credentials aren’t how we start a project.

We start with the business requirement.

We learn the process, understand the data and determine what actually needs to happen. Then we decide where the data belongs, how it should move, what the user needs to do, what can be automated and which technologies should do the work.

That’s the foundation behind the way Excel and Access builds solutions today.

We are Developers. But we don’t think only in cells.

 

Excel and Access Is More Than Our Name

Excel and Access have been part of the company from the beginning, but they also represent the combination of experience that has shaped the way we build solutions.

Excel gives us an extraordinarily flexible environment for calculation, analysis, reporting, user interaction and automation. Access and our SQL Server and database programming background bring relational thinking: Tables, relationships, keys, joins, structured data and relational design.

That combination changes the way we approach Excel. We don’t automatically flatten everything into one worksheet, assume every calculation belongs in a cell, or put data onsheet simply because we’re using Excel.

We look at the entire process and choose the architecture that fits the requirement.

 

Excel and Access isn’t just our company name. It’s the foundation of how we think.

 

How We Think About Excel Today

Modern Excel gives us far more choices than we had when Excel and Access, LLC began. Power Query changed how we connect to and transform data. The Data Model expanded what we can do with relational data inside Excel. Dynamic Arrays changed onsheet calculations, while VBA, Office Scripts and Power Automate give us different ways to automate a business process.

Our experience with those technologies eventually led to two ideas that help describe how we build today: Excel Beyond the CELL and FLUID Excel Solutions.

Beyond the CELL is about how we design the solution. We think in Tables, objects, blocks, Spill Ranges, queries, relationships, processes and outputs rather than assuming the individual worksheet cell has to be at the center of the architecture.

FLUID is about how the data moves through that architecture. Connect to the data where it exists. Transform it where the transformation belongs. Keep supporting data offsheet when users don’t need to see it. Bring users into the process when human interaction is actually required. Automate what can be automated.

The right data. In the right place. Using the right tool.

 

The People Behind the Work

I still work directly with clients, learning their businesses, understanding their data and programming solutions around the problems they need to solve. Being recognized as both a Microsoft Excel MVP and Access MVP is important to me, but the experience behind those recognitions came from more than two decades of doing the work.

I still program. I still learn. And I still work directly with clients.

 

Excel and Access, LLC operates from two U.S. offices. When a project benefits from additional expertise or capacity, I work with a small international network of Microsoft MVPs known as The Association.

The Association is separate from Excel and Access, LLC. Its members bring expertise across Excel, Access, Data, Business Intelligence and Power Platform. I provide work to members of The Association when their particular expertise or additional capacity benefits a project.

This allows Excel and Access, LLC to remain focused while bringing additional Microsoft expertise to a project when needed.

We Continue to Evolve

More than 20 years of experience doesn’t mean building solutions the way we did 20 years ago.

Excel changed. We changed with it.

Power Query, the Data Model, Dynamic Arrays and Microsoft 365 have all changed the way we develop Excel solutions. Now AI is changing Excel development again.

We use AI as part of the development process—to learn, explore, build, test and improve solutions. But AI doesn’t replace the programming experience behind the solution.

It gives experienced programmers another powerful tool.

The tools will continue to change, Excel will continue to change, and the way we develop solutions will continue to change. That’s part of what has kept this work interesting for more than two decades.

We spent more than 20 years learning how to build solutions.

We’re now learning how to build them differently.

Our work has been recognized beyond the projects we build for our clients. Excel Off The Grid featured one of our solutions as an example of using Excel, Power Query and VBA together to build a business application.
